Surgical Hair Restoration
Men who have lost large portions of their hair due to male pattern baldness are often good candidates for a hair transplant surgery by Austin Surgical Hair Restoration Doctor Daniel McGrath, D.O. Before Dr. McGrath recommends a specific procedure, he determines your degree of hair loss and the quality and quantity of your donor hair follicles. These typically come from the back of your scalp because this area is most resistant to the hormonal effects of male pattern baldness. Daniel McGrath offers Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) using the NeoGraft automated system to extract the hair follicles.
FUT Hair Transplant Surgery
Hair Restoration Doctors have used FUT for approximately 20 years to help people with areas of complete baldness re-grow their own natural hair. Doctor McGrath provides you with anesthesia at the start of the FUT process. He then trims the hair in back and removes a donor strip measuring one to two centimeters in depth. The donor strip contains numerous hair follicles that he extracts for transplant to your balding areas.
Daniel McGrath, D.O. immediately sutures the wound after removing the strip from the back of your scalp. He uses a process called trichophytic donor closure to ensure that the resulting scar is as faint and undetectable as possible. Patients who are unhappy with the appearance of a linear scar from a previous FUT surgery can also request the trichophytic donor closure procedure.
Doctor McGrath uses the ultra-refined technique with FUT surgery to make sure that the hair re-growth his patients experience several months later appears completely natural. This means that he divides the extracted follicles into groups containing one, two, three, or four individual hairs and transplants them in corresponding rows. Hair Restoration Doctors who do not employ this technique cut random hair grafts from the patient’s donor area. These grafts contain extra skin and can increase wounding at the recipient site. They can also appear bulky and unnatural. Ultra-refined FUT provides the ability to transfer hundreds of grafts in addition to limiting the wounds in the recipient area to tiny slits.
FUE Hair Transplant Surgery with NeoGraft
Although FUT allows for the maximum transfer of hair follicles in a single session, many patients are concerned about the linear scar it leaves on the back of the scalp. With the alternative of FUE, Doctor McGrath extracts hair follicles one at a time. He does this with the assistance of a circular punch measuring approximately one millimeter in diameter. The procedure does leave many small circular marks on the back of your scalp but these are nearly indistinguishable within about one week. The major downside of FUE is that it is labor-intensive and time-consuming.
Due to the length of the manual FUE surgery, it is cost prohibitive for many patients. NeoGraft solves this dilemma by automating the process of hair follicle extraction. Daniel McGrath, D.O. is the first American Board of Hair Restoration Surgeons Diplomate to use NeoGraft in Texas. Another advantage of NeoGraft is that it extracts hair follicles in a predictable pattern without the use of excess pressure. This is more comfortable for the patient than having the follicles removed with forceps. Lastly, the quality of the grafts and the survival rate tends to be higher with NeoGraft than when a patient undergoes manual FUE.
